Panopto

Panopto is 黑料网鈥檚 centrally supported video storage and management system. The University licenses Panopto Enterprise. This streaming media service is free to 黑料网 faculty, staff, and students.

  • Panopto supports a broad range of video file formats, including AVI, MP4, MPG, WMV, MOV, QT, ASF, 3GP, WMA, MP3, M4V, and more.
  • No patient Protected Health Information (PHI) can be included in 黑料网 Panopto recordings.

  2. Where to get Panopto support – the School of Medicine (SOM) has its own panopto support through the Instructional Media Services (IMS)鈥痶eam within the Information Technology Department. The IMS team extensively uses Panopto to record presentations, lectures, meetings, and events for students (we call this lecture capture). The team will field all Panopto related questions whether they pertain to lecture capture or not. Panopto assistance can be requested from the Lecture Capture page.

What is Panopto and Getting Started

Request a Recording Folder

Even though anyone with an Onyen can create a personal account in Panopto, we suggest you request a folder within the School of Medicine Department. This allows us to give access to multiple users so you can collaborate with coworkers. You can request this folder on the听Lecture Capture webpage听by selecting the 鈥�Report an Issue or Request Help鈥� button.

  • Videos uploaded to the 鈥淢y Folder鈥� of a personal account cannot be shared. However, you can create a sub-folder from which the video can be shared or, request a SOM Department folder.

Panopto Retention Policy

The retention policy is 2 years since the last time a video was viewed. This means any videos not viewed within 2 years will be deleted.

How to Upload A Video

  2. Select the blue 鈥�Create鈥� button at the top of the Panopto screen
  3. Select 鈥�Upload Media.鈥�
  4. Select the folder you want to upload the video to (a personal 鈥淢y Folder鈥� or a requested recording folder).
  5. Do not close the upload screen until the upload is complete.

Captions & Accessibility

  • All videos that are on a 黑料网 websites must be听captioned.
  • For Zoom meetings, automatic captions will be included in the files that are automatically uploaded to your Panopto account.
  • Platforms like Panopto and YouTube offer auto-captioning tools for free. Auto-captions use automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology to transcribe audio and synchronize text with videos to create closed captions.
    • Automatic captions might misrepresent the spoken content due to mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise.
    • ASR captions are typically 70% accurate depending on the audio quality in the recording.
    • You should always review automatic captions and edit any parts that haven’t been properly transcribed.

Lawsuit Against Harvard University

In 2015, for allegedly violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act by failing to provide accurate and comprehensive captioning for online educational videos.

After four years of litigation, the NAD and Harvard University settled. The settlement contained specific requirements for 99 percent accuracy rate on captions.

Embed a Panopto Video

  2. There is a step missing from the above video because it is unique to our web system. After copying the embed code (the iframe) and pasting it into a page/post, you need to change the听alligator brackets (< and >) to the squared off brackets ( [ and ] ). View our iFrames documentation for a more detailed explanation.
  3. For accessibility reasons, you should always include a title attribute for an <iframe>. This is used by screen readers to read what the content of the iframe is. The iframe code from Panopto does not include the title attribute by default so you will need to add one. Simply add title="Add your descriptive title here" to the iFrame code as shown below. Be sure you replace Add your descriptive title here, with a title that properly describes the contents of the iframe.
