Software You’ll Need
General Software Needs
- – Microsoft Office is available to all ºÚÁÏÍø students at no cost!
- Laptop/Desktop Computers: To download, visit your on your computer and click the Install Office button.
- Tablets: Visit the App Store for your device and search Microsoft Office.

- If desired, most tablet platforms also have the individual apps for download as well (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Online: A broad but limited set of features is available in the of the apps.
- Respondus Lockdown Browser – Respondus Lockdown Browser places a temporary lockdown on your laptop or tablet in order to take secure exams.
- This is used regularly in all MD Foundation Phase courses, and selectively in other courses.
- If you have used Respondus for another institution, you will need to uninstall that version and download the ºÚÁÏÍø version in order for it to work properly.
- The purpose of lockdown browsers is to prevent your computer from doing certain things that could compromise an exam. As such, certain camera plugins, screen capture software, and macro key software may prevent an exam from working.
- – To print from your laptop to a Carolina Print Hub using your student print balance, your computer requires software.
- The download for Mac installs software for both color and black and white printers. The windows installer for color and black and white are separate. If you want to use both color and black and white printers you will need both software packages installed. For an up-to-date list of available printers visit Carolina Print Hub locations.

- – Students have free access to Adobe Creative Cloud which includes favorites such as Photoshop and Premiere. Use the link to the left to place a no-cost student order for the software.

Program Specific Needs
MD Curriculum
- NBME Browser – Used for completing major course exams (midterms and finals) and subject exams in the MD Curriculum.
- A+Plus Attendance – Built into Canvas, students are able to see and verify their attendance scans
Health Sciences Curriculum
- ProctorTrack – Used for certain assessments in the Health Sciences curriculum.
Graduate Education / BBSP
- – an open-source programming language for statistical computing and graphics.
- R is free, and can be downloaded and installed on your computer from the
- R and the majority of its contributed packages can be used on ºÚÁÏÍø’s research computing servers
- It is also available in VirtualLab
- – Biorender allows you to create and share beautiful and professional science figures for publications, posters, grant applications, and other users you may have. Use the link to the left to access it via the ºÚÁÏÍø portal to have access to premium features for free.
- Prism and other research specific software – Software used in your work with labs, such as Prism, will often either be made available by your lab or be available in a research computing environment. If needs arise, please ask your lab team. Be sure to check to see if there are volume licensing options as many groups use similar software across the campus.
