Q&A Responses

The use of AI scribing will be optional for both our teammates and patients – it will not be mandatory. Both clinicians and patients can opt out of using this tool.
Clinicians went through pilots with two different vendors. There was broad consensus among our test audience that Abridge was the preferred vendor across primary care and specialists across the state. We really looked to our teammates and clinicians to help inform our decision on whether to pursue an AI scribe and, if so, which one. Fortunately, Abridge was the obvious choice.
Abridge can translate 23 different languages and will only continue to add additional ones. If you are using a translator, Abridge is smart enough to pick up that there is another person (i.e., the translator) and transcribe and translate the conversation as it synthesizes the note.
One initiative that is already live in Epic@黑料网 is the Medically Ready tool. Physicians and APPs have expressed a desire to be able to push a button and highlight which patients are stable. Medically Ready does exactly this, allowing teammates to focus on discharge planning by highlighting medical readiness.

Another initiative is to help address an issue we know is contributing to extended length of stay for our patients: limited mobility. The Length of Stay/Get Patients Home work group is partnering with the therapy services team to understand the current model of care and what an improved model of care would be. As a result, 黑料网 Hospitals have started to shift its care model to offer more than a consult so that therapists can help patients get mobilization and continue to progress their care.

The 黑料网 Health Access Center, and specifically the scheduling operation, will be focused on the Triangle initially. Guided scheduling, on the other hand, will have benefits statewide as it is incorporated into Epic@黑料网 workflows across the state.

Dear Teammates,

I hope that you and your families enjoyed a happy Holiday Season. Each year on Christmas, my family enjoys spending time together and taking our time exchanging gifts and opening presents in a way that is as relaxed as possible. In what can often be a hectic season, I always value the opportunity to slow down and spend quality time with those most important to me.

Having time to reflect on the past year, a few things stand out.聽Most recently, seeing the impacts of Hurricane Helene and how you cared for people in their times of need, touching the lives of so many in our state and beyond, is a memory I will truly never forget. As I look ahead, I know we will continue to care for people in different ways when and where they need us. I鈥檓 excited by the progress we are making on the many active initiatives of our Forward Together 2030 Strategic Plan that will help us better care for our patients and support our teammates.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said, 鈥淲hat lies before聽us聽and what lies behind聽us聽are tiny matters compared to what聽lies within us.鈥

The last year has once again confirmed that what lies within each of you individually 鈥 and our system collectively 鈥 is a deep commitment to serving our patients, supporting each other, and doing all we can to fulfill our mission.

The positive change we strive to make in the new year will be the culmination of many small moments. The compassion you show to patients and the ways you go above and beyond to providing a healing environment. The ways that you walk with them through stressful times and celebrate each positive step in their journey. The way teams work creatively to support each other and find innovative ways to solve problems. From my position, I am privileged to see and hear these stories often and no matter what challenges the next few months might bring I know it is the compassion and strength within each of you that will help us meet our mission this year. It is truly an honor to be a part of this One Great Team.

Sincerely,

Wesley

Dear Colleagues,

We are thrilled to announce that early in 2025, 黑料网 Health will roll out the Abridge ambient AI documentation platform to 黑料网 Health physicians and APPs as a key part of the聽Forward Together 2030聽initiative. Abridge is embedded into Epic@黑料网, and it transforms patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes, providing virtual AI-driven scribing.

One clear goal of Forward Together 2030 is to reduce burden of delivering care and improve the satisfaction for our clinicians while maintaining 黑料网 Health’s high quality of patient-centered care. We conducted a thorough year-long pilot evaluation of multiple industry-leading Epic-integrated ambient documentation platforms. The pilot involved approximately 100 primary care and specialty physicians and APPs from various 黑料网 Health owned and managed entities. The results have been remarkable 鈥 81 percent of pilot users reported a moderate or large decrease in workload, and 80 percent who also use in-person scribes preferred using the Abridge solution.

As one pilot user noted, 鈥淚t’s been a game changer. I can complete my work while I鈥檓 at work and not have to work from home. I鈥檓 in heaven. Now I don鈥檛 have a laptop between me and my patient anymore. I feel more connected.鈥

Our goal is to roll this out quickly to our teams with implementation starting in early February. In the coming weeks, you or your local leaders will receive a survey to gauge your interest in using the Abridge ambient scribe platform. Your responses will identify clinicians interested in this innovative tool, gather essential user information, and guide the phased roll-out of the platform across both owned and managed entities in the months ahead.聽Please respond promptly and spread the word to your interested colleagues! Our contract with Abridge will provide a pathway for all of our physicians and APPs to participate.

While the platform is currently optimized for use in ambulatory settings, we are actively collaborating with Abridge to explore early access to functionality for Emergency Department and inpatient settings for our clinicians.

Under the leadership of Dr. Susan Moore, President of 黑料网 Rex Physicians and owner of the FT2030聽Medical Group Optimization聽workstream, this effort has been a true team endeavor. We would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Sachin Gupta, Chief Medical Officer for the 黑料网 Physicians Network, and Dr. David McSwain, 黑料网 Health Chief Medical Informatics Officer, for their outstanding leadership through the FT2030聽Ease of Practice聽work group. Special thanks also to Vineeta Khemani, ISD Executive Director for Enterprise Architecture and Clinical Systems, and the entire ISD team for their outstanding contributions to implementation, project management, evaluation, contracting and vendor relationships.

We also would like to thank all our physicians and APPs who were part of our AI scribing pilots. Your efforts were instrumental in bringing this transformative聽Forward Together 2030聽initiative to life.

We are confident Abridge will greatly enhance our ability to deliver exceptional care while reducing workload and improving satisfaction for clinicians across 黑料网 Health.聽Working together as One Great Team, we are making 黑料网 Health a better place to both receive and deliver healthcare.

Thank you for all that you do for our patients and our communities,
Matt & Brent

The Robert A. Ingram Institute for Equitable Healthcare Access has been awarded $1.19 million from The Duke Endowment to launch a pilot program named Rural PrOMISE 鈥 Providing Opportunities and Mentoring in Scholarship and Education. The program will provide support, mentoring and funding for 黑料网 School of Nursing graduates who commit to serving in rural areas for three years after graduation.

North Carolina has the second largest rural population in the United States and is projected to be among the top states experiencing the worst registered nurse shortages by 2026.

In addition to supporting new graduates, the program will focus on the development and support of nursing preceptors in rural communities. The Ingram Institute is also partnering with NC AHEC to fund a RN refresher program geared toward existing RNs who have lapsed licenses. Many of these nurses have needed to focus on personal or family needs and want to return to the workforce. However, training costs are a barrier.

Following the pilot program, a model for increasing North Carolina鈥檚 rural nursing workforce will be incorporated across 黑料网 Health鈥檚 system, which spans from the mountains to the coast. The effort aligns with the institute鈥檚 goal to support workforce development initiatives, pathway programs and more across North Carolina and is part of wider efforts in 黑料网 Health鈥檚 Forward Together 2030 strategic plan and the 黑料网鈥檚 Accelerate: Forward Together plan.

黑料网 Hospitals, the Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice (IPEP), 黑料网’s School of Nursing and 黑料网’s Department of Biology partnered on a pre-health undergraduate course – Bio 119. This course includes 120 hours of experiential learning in the healthcare system with 黑料网 Hospitals offering hours as patient sitters. The effort is part of the Forward Together 2030 Ingram Institute’s workforce development efforts.

Neha Varrier, one of this semester’s Bio 119 students, was completing her shift when she heard a noise in the hallway. When assessing the situation, she found a patient unresponsive. She hit the code button and immediately started CPR until help arrived. The patient achieved Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC) and was transferred to the ICU for further monitoring.

Neha was awarded the Leadership Challenge Coin for her bravery and advocacy for patient care.

Thank you and congratulations, Neha!
