Kenya McNeal-Trice, MD

Kenya McNeal-Trice, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, has been selected as a . This recognition highlights her exceptional contributions to pediatric care and education.

Each year, the presents the George Armstrong Award to individuals who have significantly contributed to improved patient care, teaching, and research in pediatrics. George Armstrong, often called the father of modern pediatrics, founded the first institution dedicated to the isolated care of children. Born in Castleton, Scotland, in 1719, Armstrong established the first dispensary for children in London, England, in 1769. This award honors his devotion to the care of sick children and his contributions to pediatric education.

In 2007, Dr. McNeal-Trice joined the faculty at as an Assistant Professor and Associate Director of Medical Student Education in Pediatrics. By 2010, she was appointed Director of Medical Student Education Programs in Pediatrics, and in 2014, she became the Pediatric Residency Program Director. Under her leadership, the pediatric residency training programs at Hospitals were ranked among the Top 25 programs in the country and became the largest within North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Dr. McNeal-Trice is a leader in academic medicine. She is a member of the Pediatric Residency Review Committee for the ACGME and the Education and Training Committee for the American Board of Pediatrics. She is serving her second term on the AAMC’s Steering Committee for the Group in Women in Science and Medicine. Additionally, she is the President of the North Carolina Pediatric Society and has been elected to the National Academy of Distinguished Educators of Pediatrics.

The award presentation is scheduled for April 26 at the in Honolulu, Hawaii.

ELAM is the only longitudinal program in North America dedicated to preparing women for senior leadership roles in schools of medicine, dentistry, public health and pharmacy. This prestigious program is dedicated to developing the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage in today’s complex health care environment, with special attention to the unique challenges facing women in leadership positions. The ELAM program has been specially developed for senior women faculty at the associate or full professor level who demonstrate the greatest potential for assuming executive leadership positions at academic health centers within the next five years. The ELH program is designed for senior-level women leaders interested in advancing in hospitals and health care systems to positions such as CEO, CMO, CNO and CFO. This year, we launched Allyship at ELAM, a program designed to foster inclusive work environments and address organizational and institutional structural barriers with the ultimate goal of optimizing science and patient care.

Erica Brenner, MD, MSCR, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, was awarded a . Dr. Brenner received one of three junior faculty awards for 2025 for her project “Safety and Effectiveness of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in Women with Crohn’s Disease.”

The ACG Junior Faculty Development Award is a three-year award of $450,000, designed to support a junior faculty member of outstanding promise to establish an independent, productive career in gastroenterology or hepatology. This award of $150,000 per year for each of three years provides salary support for protected time to young investigators at critical points in their career development.

Dr. Brenner earned her medical degree from the SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2015. She came to for her pediatric residency and her fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology. During her fellowship she earned her MSCR from the Gillings School of Public Health. Subsequently, she completed an Advanced Inflammatory Bowel Disease Fellowship through the Multidisciplinary Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Center. She has been faculty in the Department of Pediatrics since 2022 and is as Associate Member of the Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease (CGIBD).

Sam Young, Jr., PhD, Roper Investigator, Professor of Pediatrics, and Director of the Gene Therapy Center, has been elected to his second one-year term on the Technical Activities Committee (TAC) of the .

NIIMBL is a public-private partnership dedicated to accelerating biopharmaceutical innovation, developing industry standards for more efficient manufacturing, and fostering a highly skilled biopharmaceutical workforce to strengthen U.S. competitiveness. As part of Manufacturing USA®, NIIMBL is funded through a cooperative agreement with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) within the U.S. Department of Commerce, alongside substantial support from its members.

The TAC is composed of leading technical experts in bioprocessing. It plays a crucial role in shaping NIIMBL’s technology projects, proposals, and road-mapping initiatives—ensuring that industry priorities align with future advancements in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

Since its establishment in 2017 through a $70 million cooperative agreement with NIST, NIIMBL has significantly impacted the field. In its first six years, North Carolina-based members participated in projects totaling $25.6 million, including $9.3 million in federal funding. Of this:

  • $7.8 million supported research at North Carolina universities
  • $1.4 million funded small and medium-sized enterprises
  • $100,000 went to non-profit organizations
