Kenzie Daniels, MDWhy did you decide to work in palliative care?
As a kid, I always liked to ask big questions. “What ifs?” I lost several people in my life and realized those big questions were really about uncertainty and one day dying. I started volunteering in hospice during college and medical school, but, honestly, I thought I was going to be a Med-Peds Infectious Diseases physician or primary care physician until the COVID-19 pandemic hit during my third year of residency. I spent month after month in the ICU, and it was so bleak. The team who humanized the patients in the beds before us, supported the families and friends who couldn’t see them, and constantly checked in on our well-being was the palliative care team. I knew immediately this was what I needed to do, and I’ve never looked back.

Kenzie Daniels, MDWhat is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is the people I work with. I feel supported, we can joke and laugh together, and we even hang out outside of work. I never feel alone. I also love building connections and relationships with the people I care for. I learn so much every day from our patients.

Kenzie Daniels, MDWhat do you enjoy most about living in the Triangle area?
My wife, our two dogs, and I live in Durham, and we LOVE it! It’s welcoming, diverse, and has a laid-back vibe. We can walk to Durham Bulls games, hike or float on the Eno River, explore new restaurants (our favorite is Queeny’s), and visit the farmer’s market. We love sports, and all of the colleges (Go Heels!) have excellent teams. Oh, and the music duo Sylvan Esso lives here—if you don’t know their music, don’t walk but run to check them out!

Julia Rodriguez O'Donnell LCSW, OSW-CWhy did you decide to work in palliative care?
It is a dream come true to be joining ’s Palliative Care team this summer as a clinical social worker. My background in providing counseling to adults, couples and families working through difficult transitions and losses, combined with having supported patients and families in ’s Outpatient Oncology clinics for the past 7-1/2 years, culminated in a clear path to palliative care. I am also excited to bring back into my daily practice the tools and approaches that had to take a back-seat while working in the outpatient, resource-heavy role. This includes mind-body tools, trauma-informed care, and whole-person support.

Julia Rodriguez O'Donnell LCSW, OSW-CWhat is your favorite part of your job?
I look forward as a palliative care social worker to having more time to spend with patients needing support and guidance, and to invite them into spaces of compassion, understanding and acceptance. And I am especially looking forward to collaborating with all of you as I learn and grow into my role.

Julia Rodriguez O'Donnell LCSW, OSW-CWhat do you enjoy most about living in the Triangle area?
I grew up in North Florida, then lived 24 years in the Pacific Northwest, and moved to the Triangle 8 years ago to be closer to my sister and my best friend from college. My kids (17-yr-old twins) and I are really happy here, and once of my favorite parts of being back in the South is listening to tree frogs and crickets sing at night after the rain. Also, I love hiking and paddling the lakes and rivers with my two small terrier dogs. I am also an avid DYI’er on my 70’s ranch house.

Chi An “Andy” LiuI was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and spent my childhood there. I moved to the US for college, completed undergrad at Davidson, and graduated the year Steph Curry took us to the Elite 8 on our incredible Cinderella run. Initially, I worked in the finance industry, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that I like people more than numbers. I went back to school, completed prerequisites, and got accepted to the University of Vermont School of Medicine and moved up north. After medical school, I migrated back down south for pediatric residency at the and pediatric critical care fellowship at Vanderbilt.

Having trained in residency and fellowship programs where I found my work colleagues more like my family, I was looking for a similar atmosphere. I already loved the culture, and when I interviewed for my palliative care fellowship, people I met (Alyssa, Paul, Angela, the fellows and many others) gave that sense of camaraderie and connection and made me feel at home again. Also, I’m doing a second fellowship (palliative after pediatric critical care), the Palliative Care Division has many attendings who are dual-trained in the faculty to provide me guidance. I know I will have a fun and learn a lot this year, and I look forward to it!

Outside of work, I enjoy going on walks with my wife, Kaitlyn, and our dog Annabelle. I love live music and outdoor concerts. My wife and I also enjoy going to shows and musicals (Hamilton, Mean Girls, and the last one we saw was To Kill a Mockingbird). When I lived in Vermont, I picked up snowboarding to survive the winter; the snowfall is rare here in the South, so I paddleboard instead (Jordan Lake was my spot during residency). I watch and play basketball; I make layups sometimes. In general, I enjoy being outdoors and spending time with friends and family.

As far as a superpower, my favorite superhero is Spider-Man so I guess I could just inherit his powers. Although the quick healing power of Wolverine also sounds really appealing.
