Speaker Biography

Dr. Koman is a tenured Professor, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and RehabilitationÌý²¹³ÙÌýWake Forest University School of MedicineÌýand the President of theÌýMusculoskeletal Service Institute of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. AfterÌý²µ°ù²¹»å³Ü²¹³Ù¾±´Ç²ÔÌý´Ú°ù´Ç³¾ÌýDuke University, he attended.ÌýDuke University School of Medicine.ÌýPostgraduate training atÌýDuke UniversityÌýincluded one year of Pediatrics, one year of General Surgery, four years of Orthopaedic Surgery and six months of Hand and Microsurgery.

He was an assistant professor on the Duke faculty until 1981 when he was recruited as the 5thÌýOrthopaedic surgeon at theÌýBowman Gray School of MedicineÌý(²Ô´Ç·ÉÌýWake Forest University School of Medicine).

Dr. Koman is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery with subspecialty certification in Hand Surgery.ÌýHe is currently a tenured professor in the departments of Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatrics and vascular Surgery and a Ìýmember of the graduate faculty.

As Chair, theÌýDepartment of Orthopaedic Surgery and RehabilitationÌýhas tripled in size since with 97 clinical faculty, 5 PhD faculty, two residencies (Orthopaedic Surgery and Podiatric Surgery); 5 fellowship programs and a physician scientist postdoctoral program, which hasÌýsurgery has trained more MD/PhDs than any clinical Department within WFUSM.ÌýForty one percent (41%) of the orthopaedic residents trained within the past 10 years have entered academic Orthopaedic Surgery. In addition to orthopaedic surgeons< the department includes Physical medicine and rehabilitation and Podiatry.

Dr. Koman has served on numerous committees for regional and national orthopaedic organizations, has presented over a 1,500 didactic and SocraticÌý lectures; has chaired or participated in over a hundred scientific panels; has lectured at orthopaedic meetings and medical centers in 30 states and 10 countries, and has authored more than 250 scientific articles and book chapters. He has been awarded three patents and has received more than five million dollars in grants and awards including a National Institute of Health RO 1 grant in microvascular physiology.

Dr. Koman is a member of 20 professional societies and has served as President of theÌýAmerican Society for Surgery of the Hand, theÌýEastern Orthopaedic Association, theÌýNorth Carolina Orthopaedic Society, and theÌýNorth Carolina Society for Surgery of the HandÌý(which he founded), theÌýSouthern Orthopaedic Association, theÌýClinical Orthopaedic Society, and theÌýSoutheastern Hand Association.Ìý Dr. Koman is Editor-in-Chief of theÌýJournal of Surgical Orthopaedic Advances. He reviews manuscripts for more than 10 national and international journals.

Dr. Koman and his research team received theÌýKappa DeltaÌý/ ClinicalÌýResearch Award,ÌýOrthopaedic Research and Education FoundationÌýtwiceÌý–in 1999 for their work involving basic science and translational research inÌýmicrovascular physiologyÌýand in 2019 for their 30 years of seminal work in basic and clinical applicationsÌýBotulinum toxins

In 2004, Dr. Koman was presented theÌýHuene AwardÌýby theÌýPOSNA.ÌýDr. Koman has also been acknowledged by WFUSM with the ÌýEstablished Investigator in Clinical Sciences AwardÌý(2006) and theÌýByrum MentorshipÌý AwardÌý(2021); an Honorary Doctorate from theÌýUniversity of AthensÌýin 2009; theÌýDistinguished Southern OrthopaedistÌýfrom the SOA (2011);Ìý theÌýAmerican Academy of Orthopaedic SurgeonsÌýAchievement Award (2012);Ìý theÌýHonored Surgeon in the State of North Carolina ´Ú°ù´Ç³¾ÌýtheÌýNCOA (2013); theÌýNix Award in Medical EthicsÌýfrom theÌýClinical Orthopaedic SocietyÌý(2019); the ÌýHonored Professor award from Orthopaedic SummitÌý(2019)and theÌýA Lee Osterman AwardÌýfrom the ASSH9 2022) He has been recognized on theÌýbest doctorÌýandÌýtop doctorÌýlists since their inception.

Dr. Koman was born in Winchester Virginia, has been married for 51 years to Leigh Emerson, and has 2 children (Amy and Alex) and 3 grandchildren Zell, Flynn and Nicholas). He was captain of the division I Maryland State scholastic champion tennis team and played freshman tennis at Duke. During college he taught tennis professionally. Current avocations include travel, time with family, golf, and recently model trains.
