Introduction (approximately page, single-spaced): Briefly frame the problem and rationale. Hypothesis (-es) and Specific Aims (approximately page, single-spaced): The hypothesis (-es) should be focused and testable within the time frame of the proposed research. List Specific Aims numerically and make them brief and to the point. They should directly address the hypothesis (-es) rather than just gathering data or doing a "fishing expedition." 3. Background (1 page, single-spaced): Carefully describe prior work that has led up to the current hypothesis (-es). Be thorough but concise in your review of the literature. Be sure to make a synthesis from your literature review rather than just listing a string of facts. 4. Research Design and Methods (12 pages, single-spaced): In format, this should parallel that of your Specific Aims section, e.g., if you have two specific aims, you will have two subheadings in this section where you describe the design of studies related to each specific aim. If there are general methods that apply to all specific aims, identify them as such under a separate heading. There is no need to give details of common methods. Instead, state briefly the type of method that will be used and give an appropriate reference. In some cases it may be important to explain your rationale for choosing one particular method over another. Please describe precise role the student will play in the project. 5. Data Analysis ( page single spaced) Specify end point data to be collected and how those data will address the hypothesis(es). Clearly state the number of replicates/samples/animals/patients that will be studied Describe statistical tests that will be applied to these data 6. Expected outcome/alternative approaches ( page single spaced) Briefly describe the results you predict Address potential pitfalls and how you would handle them. The point here is to assure reviewers that even if problems are encountered, you will still have a project and a meaningful summer experience. 7. Bibliography (no page limit) Give full details of all references used, including authors and titles. List numerically, either in order of citation or alphabetically, whichever you prefer. 8. Candidates Statement (approximately page, single-spaced): Provide a brief description of your goals for the summer and what you wish to accomplish.
