"Peterson-Chip"

Chip Peterson, MD

Chip grew up in Pine Knoll Shores along the East Coast of North Carolina. He attended ºÚÁÏÍø for college where he swam as a D1 athlete and majored in Biology. After college, he was selected to the US National Swim Team and during the next 9 years was the recipient of multiple awards including gold and silver world championships, gold and silver medals at the Pan American games, and recognition as an ESPN all American. As a medical student, Chip continued to excel and was recognized for his outstanding performance with induction into the AOA Honor Society. Chip matched into a top Urology program at the University of Indiana, but after completing nearly two years of residency realized that his heart and passion was still in Internal Medicine.

"Szumel-Elizabeth"

Elizabeth Szumel, MD

Elizabeth grew up in Charlotte, NC and attended Williams College where she majored in biology with a concentration in Science and Technology studies. After college, she worked for a year as a research assistant at the University of Massachusetts focusing on the gut microbiome. As a medical student at ºÚÁÏÍø, she actively worked with the student SHAC clinic as a coordinator, served as the co-president for the History of Medicine club, and was selected as one of the “Student Chiefs” for Internal Medicine. In her free time, Elizabeth enjoys working out and Orange Theory and is excited to be staying in the area as her husband finishes his Master program at Duke!

Outpatient

"Wood-Brian"

Brian Wood, MD

Brian grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina and attended Davidson College (go ‘Cats!) where he majored in History. After college, Brian worked with the Carolinas Hospice Program in Greensboro as a research assistant and outreach coordinator. As a medical student at ºÚÁÏÍø, Brian was actively involved in research, including work evaluating the effects of aging on clinical outcomes in patients receiving genotype driven PZY12 inhibitor selection after PCI and a tech-based weight management intervention in older adults. Brian was actively involved with the SNMA, served as the VP for the Graham research society, and worked as the Director for care management for the SHAC student clinic. In recognition of his outstanding compassion and clinical skills, Brian was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. ""

Gus Hendrick, MD

Gus is from Folsom, California (yes, he is a country music and Johnny Cash fan!) and attended UCLA for college where he majored in molecular, cell and developmental biology. Throughout college he worked as the head manager for the UCLA football team traveling to college football stadiums across the country. After UCLA, he worked for two years as a Lab Manager at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles with work focusing on diet and the gut microbiome. Gus attended medical school at Dartmouth where he was actively involved in the student clinic, serving as the GI clinic lead. Gus is interested in pursuing a career in Gastroenterology after Internal Medicine residency.

Outside of medicine Gus enjoys playing tennis/pickleball, cooking, playing guitar, and watching college football. His wife completed nursing school at Duke, and they are enjoying their time exploring all the Triangle has to offer.

Med-Peds

""

Olivia Hardy, MD

Olivia joined us from USF and couples matched with Claire in Pediatrics! Growing up in rural PA, she truly appreciates the Med-Peds sense of community and has taken a special interest in caring for vulnerable youth. She chose ºÚÁÏÍø for her residency training because it had the perfect combination of everything that she was looking for, exceptional all around training, a well-established Med-Peds clinic, a clear mission to provide compassionate care to all people, and a location that appealed to both her and her partner. What she loved most about ºÚÁÏÍø was that all of the people she met during her interview experience made her feel comfortable and at home.

Fun facts: She grew up on a farm in central Pennsylvania, she loves anything that gets her outside and she can’t wait to explore the area around ºÚÁÏÍø! She is also a big women’s soccer fan and is looking forward to supporting the ºÚÁÏÍø’s team as well as the NC Courage.
