A Message From the Chief

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the ºÚÁÏÍø Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. Our division is comprised of renowned clinicians and researchers who are committed to excellence in all mission areas, clinical care, research, education, and service to the state of North Carolina.

We deliver world-class, person-centered kidney care to improve the lives of individuals living with kidney diseases in North Carolina and beyond. Specifically, our faculty provide inpatient nephrology consultative services at ºÚÁÏÍø Hospitals Main Medical Center and Hillsborough campuses. Our outpatient kidney care program includes general nephrology services, offered at ºÚÁÏÍø Eastowne, ºÚÁÏÍø Burlington, ºÚÁÏÍø Panther Creek, and ºÚÁÏÍø Specialty Care Sanford as well as specialized kidney health care, including that for glomerular diseases, hypertension, kidney stones, polycystic kidney disease, women’s health, amyloidosis, and kidney palliative care. Our transplant nephrologists work with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, specialists, researchers, nurses, coordinators, and counselors to deliver expedient, state-of-the-art pre- and post-kidney transplant care. Our faculty experts also provide personalized hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis care and lead, as medical directors, community dialysis clinics located in Burlington, Carrboro, Mebane, Pittsboro, Sanford, and Siler City, NC.

The ºÚÁÏÍø Kidney Center, supported by generous donors and over 18 million dollars of annual research funding, is the division’s research engine. Our research portfolio spans the full research continuum from cutting-edge basic research to translational science to clinical and population health research. Active areas of investigation include research in glomerular and autoimmune diseases, vasculitis, diabetic kidney disease, dialysis-dependent kidney failure, vascular biology, dialysis vascular access, transplantation, women’s health, and the prevention of infectious complications of kidney disease. Our research faculty and trainees are funded by the National Institutes of Health, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, foundations, and the life-science industry.

We are dedicated to empowering the next generation of kidney care clinicians and researchers, providing a dynamic environment rich with innovative tools and mentorship to cultivate exceptional caregivers and scientists. Our award-winning educators are leaders in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate medical education, shaping the future of nephrology both locally and nationally. Our comprehensive fellowship programs offer specialized training in general nephrology with a 2-year clinical and unique 3-year research track. Additionally, we provide focused training in glomerular disease and transplant nephrology, ensuring our fellows are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of modern kidney care. Our research faculty are dedicated to mentoring aspiring junior investigators, many of whom benefit from the support of the program, a NIH/NIDDK U2C/TL1 training initiative. We are not just shaping careers, we are transforming the landscape of kidney care for generations to come!
