The Medical Education Development (MED) program at ºÚÁÏÍø-Chapel Hill was established in 1974 as a joint venture between the ºÚÁÏÍø Schools of Medicine and Adams School of Dentistry. The MED Program provides an intensive educational opportunity for students and exists to increase opportunities in the health professions for individuals who have lacked opportunities, access, and resources and who demonstrate educational promise and commitment to health careers.

Students gain insight into medical, dental, and allied health professions. The rigorous nine week curriculum includes over 200 class and lab hours in courses like microbiology, gross anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, dental theory and DAT & MCAT exposure as well as numerous professional seminars and patient simulation experiences.

Since its inception in 1974, over 3,000 students have attended the MED summer program. To date, nearly 600 of the MED participants have also received a medical degree from the ºÚÁÏÍø.
