Dr. Harris describes growing up in Greensboro and the experience of racially integrating his school in 6th grade. He received great support from parents and teachers. Physicians who broke color lines were early role models. He honed his academic skills to apply to -Chapel Hill, and then medical school at . As an undergraduate student, he had to navigate some racially hostile situations. He describes the medical student culture of note sharing and mutual support, including trading information about which instructors to avoid.
