This includes nursing mothers who want to continue lactating after they return from maternity leave. Breastfeeding has multiple benefits for both mother and baby including fewer ear and respiratory infections, decreased risks of sudden infant death syndrome, fewer hospitalizations, greatly reduced intestinal illness, fewer allergies, and reduced medical costs. The American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the World Health Organization all recommend breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life exclusively, and after that as part of a nutritious diet for at least the first year or two of life. For these reasons, the supports the efforts of its employees and students who wish to continue to provide breast milk to their infants through pumping after they return to work or school. Departments and other units within the School of Medicine are encouraged to reasonably accommodate employees and students lactation needs, in accordance with applicable policies and procedures, so long as there is no serious disruption of the units business operations or class activities due to providing lactation break time. For those who do not have private offices, the School of Medicine has made lactation rooms available in the following locations: room 310 MacNider Hall and the first floor womens restroom of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Health Care also provides lactation services that are available for use, including pump rooms with hospital-grade pumps in several locations throughout the hospitals; information regarding these services is available via the Breastfeeding Warmline at 966-4148. In addition, there are a number of lactation rooms available across campus that may be utilized. A list of the current facilities can be found online at: http://hr.unc.edu/Data/benefits/workfamily/lactation. Consistent with the s efforts to recognize the importance of supporting nursing mothers, supervisors and faculty should thoughtfully respond to requests for accommodation for lactation break time and should ensure that there are no negative consequences to employees or students who use time as provided by this policy. Supervisors and employees, and faculty and students, should work together to establish convenient times to allow the nursing mother to pump, consistent with the units operational needs or with class requirements. For example: supervisors are encouraged to consider flexible scheduling to meet these unique needs if doing so will not disrupt the units operations; an employee may use unpaid time for this purpose (such as a lunch period), which will generally not exceed one hour, and ask for this time to run consecutively with an employees paid break time (if applicable and necessary); an employee may use his/her accrued comp time or vacation/annual/bonus leave with supervisory approval; or faculty in all programs and years of the Schools curricula are encouraged to help students find times in class schedules when it is possible to meet these unique needs. The Chancellors Child Care Advisory Committee has prepared a document entitled Lactation Space: A Tool Kit for Departments and Managers that may be of interest; it is available from the Work/Life Office in the -CH Office of Human Resources. Any employee or supervisor who has a question about this policy should contact Harvey Lineberry, PhD, Assistant Dean for Human Resources in the School of Medicine, at 962-2559. Any questions about this policy pertaining to medical students should be directed to Georgette Dent, MD, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, at 962-8334.
