What are dermal fillers?

During the normal aging process, remodeling of bone and loss and redistribution of fat lead to the cardinal signs of the 鈥渁ging face鈥. These signs include accentuation of the nasolabial fold (aka smile lines, laugh lines), jowling, temporal hollowing, hollowing of the orbit, lowering of the cheek fat pad, and tear trough deformity in the region below the eyes. Dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and calcium hydroxyapatite can restore volume to the face, and help patients achieve a more youthful appearance. Surgeons can also harvest fat from patients using liposuction techniques, and inject it into the face to restore volume using their own tissue.
