鈥淲e know from lots of studies of survivors of school shootings, for example, that the effects of these events are things that are lifelong,鈥 said Dr. Sam McLean, a Professor and Faculty Member in the 黑料网 Department of Emergency Medicine, and Director of the Institute for Trauma Recovery at 黑料网-Chapel Hill.

鈥淪ymptoms can either be psychological, like the kind of flashbacks and nightmares that we see on TV shows, but can also be much more in the line of headaches, abdominal pain, having difficulty concentrating, feeling like things aren鈥檛 the way they used to be,鈥 he added.

“The great thing is that we now have a number of different treatments that we know are effective, and mental health providers can work with individuals to find out what’s best for them,” said Dr. McLean.

“Every person is different in how they are impacted by trauma and what works best for them over time,” he adds. “Friends and loved ones are very much a part of the path forward.”
