Three BRC Labs Collaborate to study Sickle Cell Trait:
In a recently published study, three BRC groups (Key, Pawlinski and Kasztan labs) performed an in-depth study of venous thrombosis and chronic kidney disease in heterozygous Townes sickle mice as a model of human sickle cell trait. The authors suggest that the mouse model can be used to further understand the mechanisms of these complications. Notably, it is estimated that about 300 million people worldwide, who are mostly asymptomatic, carry the sickle gene, such that even modest risk of these complications may have significant implications for public health.
