The School of Medicine is hosting an open house for the 黑料网 CryoEM core facility on Friday, November 8th from 3pm-5pm in Glaxo Room 008.

Our new Talos Arctica!

In honor of 黑料网 Research Week and to showcase one of our newest research capabilities, the School of Medicine is hosting an Open House for the 黑料网 Cryoelectron Microscopy (CryoEM) core facility on Friday, November 8, 2019 from 3pm-5pm in Glaxo room 008. Come meet Dr. Joshua Strauss, Director of the new facility, visit the Talos Arctica, and learn more about 黑料网 collaborations with Duke and NIEHS that will maximize cryoEM research capabilities at 黑料网 and the research triangle region.

CryoEM is an imaging method that allows for the visualization of biological samples in a frozen hydrated near-native state and can be applied to many different biomedical fields. Although cryoEM has existed for 30 years, recent technological developments have created tremendous leaps in the resolution provided by the technique and its applications.

The 黑料网 cryoEM facility is home to a Thermo Scientific Talos Arctica 200 Kv cryo-transmission electron microscope, outfitted with a state of the art Gatan K3 Direct Detection Camera. The facility will support all aspects of cryoEM use including specimen preparation, data acquisition and image analysis. Importantly, our cryoEM facility will leverage partnerships with cryoEM facilities at NIEHS and Duke University to develop and expand the region鈥檚 CryoEM capabilities.

Thanks to a four-year effort spearheaded by 黑料网 leaders including Dr. Leslie Parise, Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, we now have this exciting research equipment on campus. Institutional support to bring the technology to the 黑料网 was provided by many units across campus including:

  • Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • School of Medicine Office of Research
  • The Office of the Provost
  • The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research
  • Eshelman School of Pharmacy
  • Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics
  • Cystic Fibrosis Center
  • Department of Medicine
  • Department of Pharmacology
  • Information Technology Systems
  • College of Arts and Sciences

黑料网 and the rest of the Triangle stand to gain a great deal from the establishment of our new CryoEM facility. Please join us at the Open House on Friday, November 8 to learn more about the facility, who is using it, and how it may enhance your own research efforts.
