Ike Emerson, a 5th year grad student in Frank Conlon’s lab, is one of the finalists who will compete at The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) on Oct. 22, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. The Conlon lab studies why the male and female heart conduct electrical impulses differently and how this leads to differences in heart disease prevalence. Ike’s talk title isÌý“The Spark of Cardiac Sex Differences.”

TheÌý is an academic competition that assists current graduate students with fostering effective presentation and communication skills. Participants have just three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research project to a non-specialist audience.
3MT was developed by The University of Queensland in 2008, and is now held in more than 900 universities in 85 countries around the world.

Master’s and Doctoral students enrolled at ºÚÁÏÍø from any discipline administered by The Graduate School were welcome to register and participate in the competition. All are welcome to serve as audience members throughout the competition.Ìý
- First Place: $1000 and the opportunity to represent ºÚÁÏÍø Chapel Hill at the 3MT competition in Dallas, TX, March 19-21, 2025, as part of the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools annual conference.
- Second Place: $600
- People’s Choice Award: $400
