Hayne successfully defended her dissertation and received her PhD on August 31, 2017.

Cassandra Hayne, under the direction of Dr. Saskia Neher, successfully defended her dissertation and received her Ph.D. on August 31, 2017! The title of her dissertation is “Biochemical Characterization of Lipoprotein Lipase.“

Cassandra earned her B.S. in Biology and B.A. in Biochemistry from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). She joined ºÚÁÏÍø immediately after receiving her undergraduate degree and has been completing her doctoral training in the lab of Saskia Neher, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics. During her time at ºÚÁÏÍø, Cassandra has been supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, National Science Foundation Global Research Opportunities Worldwide, Merchant Scholarships from the University of Northern Iowa, and a Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowship from ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s Graduate School. In addition to research, Cassandra is passionate about science outreach and service; she served as a graduate representative from the department to the ºÚÁÏÍø Graduate and Professional Student Federation and has an active role in numerous committees for the department. In May 2017, she was awarded the Diane Harris Leadership Award for exemplary public service as a doctoral student in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

While at ºÚÁÏÍø, Hayne was selected 2016-2017 recipient of the Graduate Student Mentoring Award from the ºÚÁÏÍø Office for Undergraduate Research, 2016-2017 Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the ºÚÁÏÍø Graduate School, 2016 National Science Foundation Global Research Opportunities Worldwide Research Grant, and in 2015, and received the National Science Foundation Global Research Opportunities Worldwide Research Grant.

After ºÚÁÏÍø, Cassandra will be doing her postdoctoral work at National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
